Karl Callender Sr., 68

Karl Galen Callender Sr., age 68, of Constantine, died August 01, 2016, at Three Rivers Health Hospital. He was born December 28, 1947, a son of George and Alice (Bennett) Callender. On July 7, 1993 Karl married Janelle Ripke in Louisville, KY. He worked as a door builder at Hallmark Industries in Bristol for 21 years, retiring in December 2007. Karl was known as a “jack-of-all-trades” and he enjoyed woodworking, chainsaw repair, hunting and fishing.
Surviving Karl are his wife Janelle, Constantine, children Karl Callender, Kr., Atlanta, GA, Michael Callender, Portland, OR, Christine Miller, Smithville, TN, grandchildren Cody Callender and Andrea Miller, sisters Jacqueline Russell, Battle Creek, and Marlene Vaughan, St. Augustine, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Eldon Callender.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no services. Arrangements were entrusted to Eley Funeral Homes in Constantine.

Meri

Meri Ann Laughman, age 50, of Constantine, passed away Monday, August 1, 2016 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. She was born October 1, 1965 in Dallas, TX, a daughter of Benjamin and Joan (Taylor) Starkweather. She attended Edwardsburg schools. On April 6, 1990 she married Terry Laughman in Constantine.
Meri attended Trinity Missionary Church and Three Rivers Bible Church. She helped at the soup kitchen in Constantine and with church luncheons. Meri worked at Owens-Illinois and was also a babysitter.
Surviving are her husband Terry Laughman, Constantine, sons Matthew Starkweather, Mishawaka, Chad (Debbie) Laughman, Three Rivers, Stephen (Crissy) Laughman, Florida, Eric Laughman, Three Rivers, Gauge Starkweather, Constantine, daughters Lisa (Ronnie) Hawkins, Three Rivers, Kristi (Jon) Monson, Constantine, and 11 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Sheri Laughman.
Relatives and friends will be received Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Eley Funeral Home in Constantine. Religious Services will be held Saturday at 11:00 AM at Chapel Hill Missionary Church. Reverend John Wrightsman and Reverend Karl Yoder will officiate. Interment will be in Kessington Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family. David Coblentz, 78

On Monday, August 1, 2016, David M. Coblentz, age 78, went home to be with his Lord and Savior and entered into Glory after a long fight of failing health. He was surrounded by his family at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, MI. He had a zeal for life and never complained about his many health complications.
David was born in Hartville, OH on October 21, 1937. He was the son of Mose and Amanda (Sommers) Coblentz. He was one of 10 children and his brothers, sisters, and parents loved him. He married Ruth (Schwartz) of Nottawa, MI in 1959 and lived in Fort Wayne, IN for many years before moving to Nottawa, MI. He poured concrete in Indiana for 27 years for Yoder Construction and Star Homes. After moving to Nottawa, Michigan in 1980, he worked for Nottawa Public Schools driving bus, then went onto work at Burr Oak Tool and Gauge until he was physically unable. He performed maintenance for Michiana Campground until it was sold. His next adventure was being able to drive local Amish on trips until he had strokes. He loved mowing and taking care of his yard. He enjoyed listening to southern Gospel music, spending mornings at McDonald’s talking politics, and laughing with others. He enjoyed watching sports and was active in his church. He loved seeing his grandchildren play and loved his family dearly.
He is survived by his wife Ruth, his children, Dwight (Kathy) Coblentz, Debi (Mark) Schrock, and Sherry Coblentz. His grandchildren are Josh Coblentz, Bethany (Keith) Taylor, Gabe, Ethan, and Kalee Schrock, and Addison and Reagan Johnson. He also has 2 sisters, Etta Detweiler, Katie (Levi) Troyer, 3 brothers Elmer (Mattie) Coblentz, Enos (Berneda) Coblentz, Raymond (Edna) Coblentz, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Mose and Amanda (Sommers) Coblentz, his sister Elva Dalton, his brothers Mervin, Roman (Elise), and Noah (Netty) Coblentz, his children Dwayne, Marsha, and Martha, and his father and mother-in-law Pete and Barbara (Wickey) Schwartz.
Visitation will be on Thursday, August 4 at Locust Grove Mennonite Church at 29525 Findley Road in Burr Oak, MI from 2-4 and 6-8pm. The funeral will be on Friday, August 5 at Locust Grove Mennonite Church at 10:00am with visitation an hour before.

Bob Norton, 57

Robert “Bob” Scott Norton, age 57, of Cassopolis passed away on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at Borgess Lee Memorial Hospital after a brief battle with cancer. He was born in Chicago, IL on September 29, 1958 and was raised by parents Harry and Francis (Mikel) Norton.
Bob graduated from Marcellus High School in 1977 where he excelled on the football field. He then went onto earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education and Physical Education from Western Michigan University and Southwestern Michigan College. Bob was united in marriage to Jackie Raver on July 6, 1985 in Three Rivers whom survives. Bob also spent many years coaching boys and girl’s basketball and softball. He was an avid Tigers, Packers, and Spartan’s Fan and also enjoyed golfing and mushroom hunting. Although Bob’s illness was sudden, he cherished and adored his friends and family, especially his granddaughter until the very end.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Bob leaves to cherish his memory wife, Jackie Norton; daughter, Lindsey (Tyler) Lewis; son, Kyle (Kaitlyn) Norton; brother, John Norton and granddaughter, Brooke Norton.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until time of funeral services beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, August 5, 2016 at Hohner Funeral Home.
Interment will be held at Little Fish Lake Cemetery.

John Aronson, 94

John Walter Aronson, age 94, of Three Rivers formerly of South Bend, IN passed away on Monday, August 1, 2016. John was born in Chicago, IL on April 24, 1922 to the son of Arthur C. and Emily Aronson.

John served his country honorably as a Sergeant during World War II. Following his service he attended and graduated from Augustana College. He began his career as a sales representative with Johnson and Johnson Corp. for twenty-five years and later moved to the P.G.S. Floridian Corp. where he worked for twenty plus years before retiring. In 2004 John met his loving companion for the last twelve years Edie Howe and her family and spent many glorious times at their Corey Lake Home.

John leaves to cherish his memory constant companion, Edie Howe and her family; sons; Thomas J (Nancy Collins) of South Bend, IN and Craig A. (Mary) Aronson of Garden City, KS. Two grandchildren, Jamie and Andy (A’Lana) Aronson, and two great grandchildren, John Connor and Brooks Leigh, as well as many extended grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 5, 2016 at Messiah Lutheran Church; 185 W. 5th St; Constantine, MI 49042 with Pastor Dennis Smith officiating. Cremation will be conducted following services. Interment of cremains will be held at Cedar Grove Cemetery in South Bend, IN at a later date

Becky Ultz, 58

Becky Alice Ultz, age 58, of Burr Oak, was surrounded by her family Thursday evening, Aug. 4, 2016, following a long, hard-fought battle with cancer, she was called home to a place where there is no more sadness or pain where she can glorify God with her infectious smile forever.
She was born April 4, 1958, in Sturgis, a daughter of Dale and Evelyn (Link) Brunner.
Becky was a lifelong Burr Oak resident and a graduate of Burr Oak High School with the class of 1976.
On May 20, 1977, she married Jeff Ultz at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis.
Becky had been employed by Currier Tire in Burr Oak for more than 18 years, a job she loved doing. She also had worked at Burr Oak Community Schools as a teacher’s aid for many years and babysat in her home when her children were young.
She was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Burr Oak, where she taught Sunday school for more than 20 years and was a member of Ladies Aid. Becky was a longtime member of Burr Oak Mother’s Club, served as a Burr Oak High School class advisor and was an avid recycler for many years. She enjoyed “Ladies Night Out” monthly dinners out with friends, watching birds eat from the feeders and raise their babies in the backyard, ceramics, canning and freezing the harvest from the family garden and many will miss her famous decorated cutout cookies she baked for every occasion. Becky had involvements and hobbies, but what she truly cherished was time spent with her family.
She is survived by her loving and dedicated husband of 39 years, Jeff; a daughter, Tosha (Ben) Ultz-Harper of Grand Rapids; a son, Jesse (Crystal) Ultz of Novi; four grandchildren, Grace, Lillian, Abby and Colton; her mother, Evelyn Brunner; three sisters, Teresa (Randy) English of Elkhart, Ind., Lorri Brunner of West Branch and Julie Brunner of Constantine; a brother, Dan (Tammy) Brunner of Burr Oak; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the Rosenberg Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 807 E. Chicago Road, Sturgis. Funeral services celebrating the life of Becky Ultz will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Burr Oak. The Rev. Kurt Kuhlmann will officiate. A graveside committal will follow the service at Burr Oak Cemetery in Burr Oak.

Kathy Curtis, 71

Kathleen A. Curtis, age 71, of Colon, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2016, unexpectedly at her home.
Kathy was born Nov. 22, 1944, a daughter to Roy L. and Leona L. (Dahl) Curtis.
She graduated from Normal College of the American Gymnastics Union of Indiana University and taught physical education for 31 years, finishing her career in education at Colon Community Schools.
She is survived by her mother Leona L. Curtis; sister Rhonda Curtis of Boone Grove, Ind.; two brothers, Steven Curtis of Valparaiso, Ind. and Loren Curtis of DeMotte, Ind.; four nieces and two nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father and an older sister, Sharon.
As to her wishes, there will be no services. If desired memorials may be made in memory of Kathy to the charity of one’s choice . The family was assisted by Schipper Funeral Home in Colon.

Dr. James Reiff, 81

Dr. James Reiff, age 81, of Sturgis, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2016, at Heartland Health Care Center in Three Rivers.
He was born March 17, 1935, in Chicago, a son of the late Nathan and Frieda (Shertz) Reiff.
James spend the majority of his life in the Michiana area, settling in Sturgis 22 years ago.
He worked as a doctor for many years in the family practice. Later in life, he found that his true passion was working as a doctor in the mental health and addictions field.
In James’ free time, he enjoyed music, travel and learning.
Surviving are his children, Greg Reiff of Bonita Springs, Fla., James (Caryn) S. Reiff, II of Issaquah, Wash., Cynthia (Hayato) Nakamura of Phoenix and Jeffery (Dee) Reiff of Renton, Wash.; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Joan Lyons of New York.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating the life of James Reiff will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, 200 Pleasant Ave., Sturgis. Retired Pastor Robert Keim will officiate.
The Rosenberg Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 807 E. Chicago Road, Sturgis, has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Ricky David Mathews, age 64, of Burr Oak, passed away Friday, Aug. 5, 2016, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo.
Ricky was born March 8, 1952, in Sturgis, a son to the late D. Fay and Mary Jane (Sanders) Mathews.
He had lived most all of life in St. Joseph County and graduated from high school in Parchment. Ricky served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict. He had been employed at American Axel in Three Rivers as a machine operator.
Ricky enjoyed fishing, golfing, reading, camping and video games.
He is survived by one brother, Peter (Gerry) Mathews of Mendon; three sisters, Ruth (Ron) Lilly of Burr Oak, Mary (Lloyd) Tyler of Burr Oak and Dawn (Gerald) Selders of Benzonia; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Danny Mathews.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, at the Burr Oak Missionary Church, in the fellowship hall, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Funeral services celebrating the life of Ricky D. Mathews will be Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2016 at 11 a.m. from the church with Pastor George Milliman officiating.
Burial will follow in Adams Cemetery. If desired memorials may be made to the family, envelopes will be available at the church or the Schipper Funeral Home in Colon.

Teresa A. (Zaika) Hamilton, age 50, of Sturgis, passed away Sunday afternoon, Aug. 7, 2016, at the Sturgis Hospital emergency room.
She was born Nov. 17, 1965, in Pontiac, a daughter of Birt and Germain (Pykor) Zaika.
Teresa resided in the Sturgis area for the past 18 years and her early life was spent in Manistee.
She had been employed by Vaupell Midwest Molding in Constantine, Morgan Olson in Sturgis and Syndicate Systems in Middlebury, Ind.
Teresa enjoyed collecting “pretty things.”
She is survived by a daughter, Rachelle Hamilton of Three Rivers; a son, Dillon Long of Sturgis; two granddaughters, Aaralyn Kitchen and Adeline Sassaman; her father, Birt Zaika of Bear Lake; a sister, Angela Zaika of North Carolina; a brother, Birt Zaika of Bear Lake; a niece, Haley Patton; and a nephew, Corey Nardi.
She was preceded in death by her mother.
In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place and a private Irish wake will be held at a later date.
The Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, is entrusted with the arrangements.

Dana Marie Detwiler, age 55 of Three Rivers, died Friday, Aug. 5, 2016 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo following a long illness. She was born in San Francisco, CA on Oct. 4, 1960 the daughter of Dwayne L. and Anna (Medeiros) Detwiler. The family moved to Michigan in 1974 and Dana graduated from Mendon High School with the class of 1980. She was a wonderful daughter, sister, and aunt and did not allow her disabilities to keep her from volunteering at the Pregnancy Hotline and working for Rainbow Carpet Cleaning. She also enjoyed cooking for her family, and collecting angels.

Dana is survived by her mother, Anna Detwiler of Three Rivers; three siblings, Dwayne Detwiler, Jr. of Constantine, Darlene (Donald) Annis of Centreville, and Darrel (Marie) Detwiler of Vicksburg; several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Dwayne L. Detwiler, Sr. in 2013.

In keeping with her wishes, cremation has been conducted. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 pm Thursday, Aug. 11, 2016 at the Eickhoff Farrand Halverson Chapel in Three Rivers. Memorial services will begin at 7 pm Thursday at the funeral home with Dale Leensvaart officiating. A private interment will take place later in Peek Cemetery. Raymond, Arthur Huddleston, Jr. age 92 of Three Rivers, died Monday, Aug. 8, 2016 at his home. He was born in Muncie, IN on March 15, 1924 the son of Raymond and Ethel (Shull) Huddleston and he attended school in Muncie. Ray served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers before returning to Muncie where he was a mechanic at the Ford Dealership. He would later become the Service Manager at a Ford Dealership in Venice, Florida, and later worked at the Publix Supermarket.

Ray was a life member of American Legion Post #170 of Three Rivers. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed carpentry and built his previous home. He enjoyed fishing, playing his guitar, singing at church, and travels with his wife.

Ray was married to Donna (Sherburn) Parrish on May 7, 1977 in Sarasota, FL. She survives along with a son, Jerry (Diane) Huddleston; 3 step-sons, Danny (Nancy) Boris, Richard (Stacy) Boris, and Donald (Leisa) Boris; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a sister, Anna Lee Wright. He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sons, Danny and David Huddleston; and by 2 brothers, Fred and Edward Huddleston.

The family will receive friends on Sunday from 4 to 6 pm at the Eickhoff Farrand Halverson Chapel in Three Rivers. Funeral services will be 11 am Monday, Aug. 15, 2016 at the funeral home with Pastor Josh Wiggins of the Edwards Corners Bible Church officiating. Douglas Alton Adams, 77, of New Carlisle, Ind., passed away at 2:40 p.m., Friday, Aug. 5, 2016 in Hospice House.
Douglas was born on Jan. 8, 1939, in Three Rivers, to Harold Leroy and Ila Mae (Decker) Adams.
He grew up in Colon, and graduated from Colon High School in 1957. He was a 1962 graduate of Michigan State University and received his master’s degree from Central Michigan in 1970.
Douglas had been employed as a loan officer with National Bank of South Bend (New Carlisle Branch) and Teacher’s Credit Union (Walkerton Branch).
On July 28, 1962 in Sturgis, Mich., he married Margaret “Peg” Machan, who survives. Also surviving are his two children, Elizabeth “Beth” (Rick) Gorney of South Bend, Ind., and Timothy (Melissa) Adams of DeMotte, Ind.; two grandchildren Micah and Caden Adams; two sisters, Margaret (Charles) Mangold and Kathleen Adams, both of Colon; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will take place at 11 a.m. EST., Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2016, in the New Carlisle United Methodist Church. A visitation will take place from 2-8 p.m. Monday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Ind., and for one hour prior to the services in the church on Tuesday.
Douglas had served in the United States Army Reserves from 1957 – 1963. He was a member of the New Carlisle United Methodist Church. Douglas had been a 40 year member of the New Carlisle Lions Club where he had served as president many times and had also held other offices. He was a member of the Alex Coquillard Chapter Sons of the American Revolution and the South Bend Area Genealogical Society. He had been active in organizing “Hometown Days” in New Carlisle.

Peggy Ann Greselin, age 71, of Marcellus, MI passed away Saturday, August 13, 2016.
She was born March 22, 1945 in Lawrence, MI the daughter of Arthur W. and Pauline L. (Johnson) Carney. On March 27, 1965 she married Gerry Guy Greselin who preceded her in death in 2001.
Peggy formerly worked at Musselman’s in Paw Paw, and at the former Melville’s Tavern in Marcellus where she met her husband Gerry. She was also a farmer. She was previously involved with the Girl Scouts as a leader, the Township Zoning Board of Appeals, Shop with a Cop in Marcellus & Parma, Senior Comodities and on the board at the Cass County ISD. She enjoyed wildlife rehab and traveling and her family.
She is survived by two daughters, Julie (Luke Schultz) Harris and April (Brian) Easton both of Marcellus; four grandchildren, Leslie (Dustin Stevens) Harris, Fred, Evan and Samantha Easton; one great-granddaughter, Mia Rae Stevens; two brothers, John Carney of Kalamazoo and James Carney of Marcellus and her significant other, James Steele. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gerry and her sister Mary Austin.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 PM Thursday, August 18, 2016 at the Marcellus United Methodist Church, Marcellus. Memorial services will follow at 3 PM.

Graham G. Gooden, age 45, of Schoolcraft, MI, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, August 14, 2016.
He was born April 26, 1971 in Kalamazoo, MI the son of James Richard Gooden and Karen “Katie” Jeanne (Thompson) Martin. On January 1, 2001 he married Michelle K. Holston who survives.
Graham was a member of Simple Truth Church, Marcellus and the Three Rivers Community Players. He loved people and was very outgoing. He was known for his kind words, his quick wit and impersonations. Graham loved the Lord as evidence by his passion to worship, pray and minister to anyone and everyone. He enjoyed target shooting, fishing, photography, and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his mother Karen “Katie”(Tom) Martin of Portage, MI, his wife Michelle K. Gooden of Schoolcraft; four sons, Micah, Elijah and James Gooden of Schoolcraft, MI and Richard E. Geraghty of South Bend, IN; one sister, Beth Ann (George) Martin-Guthrie of Lawton; sister in law & brother in law, Howard & Crystal Holston; nieces & nephews Howard N. and Gunnar Holston, Ashley (Roger) Whaley and Lauren (Matt) Wilds; his in-laws Susan & William Sands of Three Rivers. He was preceded in death by his father James Richard Gooden and grandparents Garfield & Virginia Thompson and Jim & Glenola Gooden.

James A. Boyden, age 72, of Klinger Lake, White Pigeon, passed away early Monday morning, Aug. 15, 2016, at his home.
He was born April 20, 1944, in Lansing, a son of the late Charles and Martha (Gegung) Boyden.
Jim resided most of his life in Sturgis and was a graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1962.
On Sept. 26, 1981, he married Jane Clock in Sturgis.
Jim retired as an agent with AAA of Michigan Insurance Company following over 30 years of dedicated service to the Sturgis area. He also had worked for Kirsch Company in Sturgis.
He was a member of Klinger Lake Country Club and B.P.O.Elks #1381, both in Sturgis.?Before he became ill, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and loved playing golf with his many buddies. Jim also enjoyed volunteering his time at the Friday Friendship Lunch at St. John’s Episcopal Church.
He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife, Jane; a daughter, Julie (Bruce) Buhl of White Pigeon; a son, Steven Boyden of Kalamazoo; a sister, Polly Price of El Segundo, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert; a sister, Agnes; and a niece, Karen.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, at the Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis. A memorial requiem Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Sturgis. The Rev. Aaron Evans and Pastor Robert Keim will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests those wishing to make a memorial donation in Jim’s memory consider Hospice of Sturgis, P.O. Box 126, Sturgis, MI 49091; or St. John’s Episcopal Church Friday Friendship Lunch, 110 S. Clay St., Sturgis, MI 49091.
