Marie Ann Hassenger, age 62, of Centreville, passed away on Tuesday, August 16, 2016. She was born in Three Rivers on September 28, 1953, a daughter of Stanley and Lois (Smith) Hassenger. She graduated from Three Rivers High School in 1972 and went on to earn her Associate’s Degree at Glen Oaks Community College and Southwestern Michigan College. Marie previously worked at Kmart in Sturgis for 30 years and currently at Walmart in Three Rivers for the past 9 years.

Surviving Marie is her brother Mark (Bonnie) Hassenger of Constantine, nephew Craig Hassenger of Constantine, Aunts Joan Oxender of Romeo, Irma (Guy) Johnson of Constantine, Sara “Sally” (Dale) Stuby of Constantine, Susan Outman of Constantine, and Avis (Allen) Baldwin of Three Rivers; and Uncle Benton (Suzi) Alexander of Alaska. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Relatives and friends will be received Thursday, August 18 from 12 – 2 pm at Messiah Lutheran Church, Constantine. Religious services will follow at 2 pm with Pastor Dennis Smith officiating. Kenneth Hugh Phillips, age 72, of Sturgis, passed away early Monday morning, Aug. 15, 2016, at his home, surrounded by his family.
He was born Feb. 17, 1944, in Three Rivers, a son of the late Russell W. and Marie (Hasbrouck) Phillips.
Ken resided most of his life in Sturgis and was a graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1962.
On Feb. 5, 1991, he married Sue Ann Sprister Harmon in Las Vegas.
He retired from the state of Michigan MDOT following 33 years of dedicated employment. At the time of his retirement, he held the position of superintendent of highways.
Ken was an avid golfer who played anywhere he could. He played every year at Myrtle Beach, N.C., Gulf Shores, Ala., and a special golf trip to Ireland. He was also an accomplished bowler, bowling a perfect 300 game and an 800 series.
He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 17 years, Sue Ann; a son, Craig (Angie) Phillips of Fennville; a daughter:, Cris (Phil Dunn) Phillips of Kansas City, Mo.; two stepsons, Matt (Jayne) Harmon of Sturgis and Jason (Jakki) Bibb of Comstock; a grandson, Cody; four granddaughters, Megan, McKenna, Breckyn and Annika; a sister, Ann Gustafson of Edwardsburg; and nieces and nephews.
In accordance with Ken’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A gathering of family and friends to honor, remember and celebrate the life of Kenneth Phillips will be held from 5-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, at Cedar Lake Golf Course, 3355 E-700 N, Howe, Ind.
The Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements.

Fred Fish, 86

Frederick Devere Fish, age 86, died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2016 at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. Fred was born in Grand Rapids, MI on Oct. 19, 1929 the son of Devere and Mary Louise (Haas) Fish. He graduated from Grand Rapids Union High School and later attended Western Michigan University. Fred served in the U.S. Army in Korea with the 703rd Maintenance Company, earning 2 bronze service stars. Fred was married to Marilyn Joyce Smith on Aug. 6, 1954 in Grand Rapids, and where Fred became a lumber broker. His job required them to live in many areas in Michigan, and eventually the west coast of the United States. Following his retirement and return to Michigan he was a salesman for Centennial Wireless. Fred was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons and the Elks Lodge in Sturgis. He enjoyed fishing, skeet shooting, photography, and spending time with his granddaughters.

Fred is survived by a daughter, Carolyn (Warren) Link of Mendon; a son, Bruce (Angela) Fish of Vancouver, WA; four granddaughters, Megan (Aaron) Eickhoff, Brenna Link, Stephanie Fish, and Kaileigh Page. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marilyn; son, Don Fish; and infant brother, Bruce Fish.

Mugs Davenport, 80

Margaret “Mugs” Davenport, age 80, of Centreville, passed away Thursday, August 18, 2016, at Riverview Manor Nursing Home.  She was born in Three Rivers on October 22, 1935, a daughter of Raymond and Helen (Burrow) Watkins.  Mugs graduated from Three Rivers High School in 1953.  On December 4, 1953, she married James Davenport in Centreville.  He preceded her in death October 11, 1987. From 1971-2010, Mugs worked at the St. Joseph County Register of Deeds.  She also worked at St. Joseph County Animal Control, during that time, for 25 years.  She previously held positions at Dr. Denton’s in Centreville, Trans-O-Gram in Sturgis, and at Pop’s Popcorn Stand in Three Rivers.  Mugs was a member of the St. Joe Valley Boat Club, Hart Club, and Rainbow Sam’s Club.

Mugs is survived by her daughter Sue Ellen (Robert) Stevenson of LaFontaine, IN, son Terry (Rhonda) Davenport of Centreville, grandchildren TJ Nickell, Dawn (Dan) Hillman, Tim (Amanda) Davenport, Jason (Billi Jo) Davenport, and Eric (Angie) Davenport; great-grandchildren Madelyn, Makenna, Peyton, Makinzie, Miraya, Gavin, and Jayden; sister Barbara Lawson of Three Rivers, and brother Richard Watkins of Texas.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and step-father Gene McKenzie.

Relatives and friends will be received Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at Eley Funeral Home, Centreville, where religious services will be held Tuesday at 11 am.  Interment will be in Prairie River Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to the West Michigan Cancer Center.  Online condolences may be left for the family at www.eleyfuneralhomes.com.

Bobbie Jo (Terry) Adkins, 75, of White Pigeon, died Thursday, Aug. 18, 2016, at her home following an extended illness.
She was born March 13, 1941, in Floyd County, Ky., the daughter of Doyle and Mae (Smith)?Strange.
She was a resident of the White Pigeon area for 50 years, coming from Sturgis. She was employed for many years in manufacturing and in healthcare taking care of elderly patients.
She enjoyed casinos and her family and was a good friend and mom to many and a grandma to all children who knew her.
She was married to Olie Terry and Larry Adkins who both preceded her in death.
Surviving are seven children, Ronald (Becky) Terry, Jennifer (John) Gould, Sheila (Jimmy) Robinson, Rickey (Reble) Terry, all of Mottville, Roger (Sherry) Terry of Elkhart, Ind., Kalvin (Corena) Terry of White Pigeon and Randy (Christina) Terry of Three Rivers; 20 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sister, Wanda Emerick of Kendallville, Ind.; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers and one sister.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial visitation will be held from 1-3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26 at the Farrand Funeral home in White Pigeon. Donations may be directed to the family.

Roberta Davidhizar, 88, of White Pigeon, died Friday, Aug. 19, 2016, at the Heartland Health Care Center in Three Rivers following an extended illness.
She was born in Walker County, Ala., on Dec. 6, 1927, the daughter of Fletcher and Julie (Kitchen) Griffin and she was a White Pigeon area resident since 1957.
She was employed as a press operator for Taylor Products in Elkhart and a member of Mottville Bible Church. She enjoyed reading, sewing and bowling.
On May 21, 1965, she married Carl D. Davidhizar in Union, Mich. He died April 24, 1995.
Surviving are her daughter, Barbara (Richard) Claxton of White Pigeon; son, Roy Charles (Terri) Harris of Union; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Leon Griffin of Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Roy Thomas Harris; and two brothers.
Relatives and friends may call from 5-8 p.m. today (Monday) at the Farrand Funeral Home in White Pigeon where services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, August 23, with the Rev. Mike Bender of the Mottville Bible Church officiating. Interment will take place in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola, Ind.

Clyde Lowler, 70

Clyde Lowler, age 70, of Constantine, died on Sunday, August 21, 2016 at his home. He was born May 13, 1946 in Trenton, MI a son of Clyde and Mertle (Schout) Lowler. Clyde graduated from Grosse Ile High School and Western Michigan University University. On August 17, 1968 he married Susan L. Pauline in Grand Rapids. Clyde served as Constantine Middle School guidance counselor from 1970 to 2003. He also coached many years for the football, wrestling, golf and baseball programs. Clyde was inducted into the Constantine Athletic Hall of Fame in honor of his many years of service to the community. He enjoyed golfing and was member of the Constantine United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife Susan Lowler, sons Adam (Lauren) Lowler, Jason Lowler, John (Amy) Lowler, daughter Tonya (Robert) Greenwald, grandchildren, Chandler Lowler, Devan Lowler, Tretin Greenwald, Tianna Greenwald, Jacob Barnes, Izabella Lowler, AJ Lowler, David Thomas and Jake Thomas and brother Donald Lowler. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother David Lowler.

Cremation has taken place. Relatives and friends will be received Tuesday from 5 – 8 pm at Eley Funeral Home in Constantine. Religious services will be held 4 pm Wednesday at Constantine United Methodist Church with Pastor Ed McCutchan officiating. ScanCheryl A. Bradford, age 61, of Mottville, passed away on Saturday, August 20, 2016 in Traverse City. Cheryl was born February 28, 1955 in Elkhart, a daughter of Max and Clara (Akin) Burkey. She graduated from Constantine High School in 1973. On October 12, 1974 Cheryl married Howard E. Bradford in Pacific Grove, CA. She enjoyed camping, fishing, dune buggy’s and boating, and was a NASCAR fan.
Surviving are her husband Howard Edward Bradford, Mottville, son Jerod (Kassandra) Bradford, Three Rivers, grandson Cayden Bradford, Three Rivers, brother Eugene (Brenda) Burkey, Mottville, sister Karla (Jim Jr.) Sweat, Constantine, special friends Connie (Roger) Young, Alabama, Camila (Eric) Gibson, Alabama, Donna Aikin, Ft. Wayne, Nona Vogelzang, Goshen, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Carlie BentleyCarlie “Pee Wee” Bentley, age 77, of Three Rivers passed away on Friday, August 12, 2016 at his home. He was born in Gary, IN on April 2, 1939 the son of O.L. and Effie Mae( Bentley) Herring.
Carlie leaves to cherish his memories his one and only sister, Bessie Herring of Merriville, IN; loving children, Keith (Georgia)Bentley of Indianapolis, IN; Carla Bentley of Three Rivers; Sharon(Donald ) Carter of Chicago, IL; John Burns of Sturgis, MI; Darrell Lynch of Kalamazoo, MI; Yolanda(Marcus) Hamilton of Chicago, IL; Charles (Kimberly) Hagan of Three Rivers, MI; Natalie (Mack) Henry of South Bend, IN.

John Philip Pincek, 63, of St. Joseph, passed away from cancer on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2016 at his home with his wife Julia by his side. Arrangements have been entrusted to Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph, MI 49085. Cremation has taken place and services will be held at a later date. John was born in Three Rivers on Dec. 2, 1952 to the late John and Sabina (Cibulka) Pincek. He was a 1971 graduate of Three Rivers High School, and received his associate’s degree in engineering from Glen Oaks Community College. On Oct. 13, 1978 in Three Oaks he married Julia Lynn Karsen. John was a mechanical design engineer at Eagle Technologies in Bridgman. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church; a member of the Michigan City Yacht Club; and was currently President of the Channel Bluff Condominium Association. John and Julia loved taking their boat the ‘Lydia Rose’ out on Lake Michigan; and he enjoyed music and playing his guitar.

John is survived by his wife, Julia; his daughter, Mia; grandson, Jackson; and two sisters, Rosemarie “Rosie” (Ken) Stanard and Regina (Doug) Beckle both of Three Rivers; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved canine companion Lilliebelle.

FB_IMG_1471291220049Helen Elizabeth Slentz, age 95, of Three Rivers, passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at the Heartland Health Care Center. She was born in Niagara Falls, New York, on August 30, 1920 the daughter of the late James and Elizabeth Ames.
Helen attended Stella Niagara Seminary Vocational School. She met and married at St. Joseph Church Niagara Falls the love of her life, Paul Slentz. Helen was a long time member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where she was also a member of Daughters of Mary. She was Past President of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #170, the 8 & 40 Salon #717, St. Joe County Ladies Recreation Club, the Three Rivers Hospital Auxiliary, Heartland Auxiliary, and the Jolly 12 Club.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband Paul Slentz, and one son Keith Slentz.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory, two daughters, Julie Bartow, and Rosalie (Gene) Sanders; two sons, Mark and James Slentz; all of Three Rivers; four grandchildren, Tonya, Dana, Hal, and Elizabeth, as well as several great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until time of services at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 25th, 2016 at the Hohner Funeral Home.
Burial services will be held in Riverside Cemetery, Three Rivers.

Logan Alan Brackett, our little angel, slipped to the Heavens on Sunday, August 21, 2016. He was born on July 24, 2016 to his beloved parents, Casey and Darcy Brackett. He had three loving brothers, Robbie, Zachary, and Brady Chobot; and loving grandparents, Robert and Colleen Horton, and Joyce and Ken Brackett.

David WilliamsDavid S. Williams, age 79, of Three Rivers, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, August 22, 2016 at the Pine Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on August 2nd, 1937 in Schoolcraft, the son of Lester and Irene Williams.
Mr. Williams began work for Continental Can Corporation and later Owens-Illinois Corporation where he eventually retired after over twenty years of employment. David enjoyed fishing, cooking, singing with his late wife Janet, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
David was preceded in death his parents; wife, Janet Marie Williams, in 2011, whom he married on May 22, 1971; sister, June Beatty.
Mr. Williams leaves to cherish his loving memory, five children, Ted (Michelle) Hilliard, Sherry (David) Morrill, Chuck Williams, Tammy Macklin, and Mark Williams; grandchildren, Westley Morrill, Madison Hilliard, and Danielle Morrrill.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until time of services at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, August 26th, 2016 at the Hohner Funeral Home with Pastor Dwayne Swinehart officiating.

IMG_0674Gwynn Jane Schrader, age 92, of Centreville, passed away on Thursday, August 25, 2016. She was born in Gary, IN on June 29, 1924, a daughter of Charles and Pearl (Hillel) Walsh. Gwynn graduated from Griffith High School in 1942. On November 17, 1945 she married Dale R. Schrader in Highland, IN. He preceded her in death June 1, 2011. Gwynn served her country in the US Navy WAVES during WWII. Following her service, she worked for the Selective Service System from 1952-1968 in Centreville and Three Rivers. Gwynn spent most of her life as a “Domestic Engineer”, taking loving care of her family and home. She was a member of the Hice-Shutes American Legion Post 170, Three Rivers, and she enjoyed bridge club, travel, crochet, baking, bowling and square dance.

Surviving are children Keli (Steve) Quake, Centreville, Sheli (Joe) Hittler, Sturgis; Marc (Sherry) Schrader, Chad (Kim Crose) Schrader, all Three Rivers; sister Louise Walsh, CA; 8 grandchildren; and several great and great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Dale R. Schrader Jr., and sister Charlene Kornburg.

According to her wishes, cremation has taken place. Relatives and friends will be received Tuesday, 12-2 pm at Eley Funeral Home, Centreville where Memorial services will be held at 2 pm. Pastor David Peterson, Centreville Baptist Church will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow at Prairie River Cemetery. RiderKalan Jo Rider, age 24, of White Pigeon passed away tragically on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at Bronson Methodist Hospital. She was born on August 29, 1991 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Jeffrey and Kathy (Kraus) Rider.
Kalan was a graduate of Constantine High School class of 2010 and attended M.C.I.T. College in 2012. She was most recently employed at McDonald’s in White Pigeon. She was a faithful member of Temple Baptist Church where she made many lasting friendships. Kalan volunteered her free time to missionary work and public speaking for disabled students. She cherished spending time with her daughter, Lily and enjoyed listening to music, dancing, and writing poetry. Kalan had a special gift of thinking of others and the value of spending time with those closest to her. She will be missed by all, who were touched by her special spirit.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory daughter, Lily Rider; mother Kathy Rider of White Pigeon; sister, Nicole Rider; and special companion, Nick Stratton of Detroit.
Kalan was predeceased by her father, Jeffrey Rider in 2015.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 29, 2016 at Hohner Funeral Home.

Harley Saidla, 76

20160827_123111Harley C. Saidla, age 76, of Marcellus, passed away at home Friday, August 26, 2016 with his family by his side.
He was born May 10, 1940 in Kalamazoo, MI the son of Donald E. and Ruth (Sternberg) Saidla. On November 22, 1985 in Wakelee, MI he married Janice Kleinfelder who survives.
Harley graduated from Marcellus High School in 1959 and went on to serve in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a life member of the Marcellus V.F.W. Post 4054 and previously served as Commander. He retired after 30 years as a carpenter for Upjohn Pharmaceuticals and also retired from the Marcellus Fire Department after 12 years of volunteering. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, yard work and tinkering in the garage. He wasn’t one to sit still, he was always doing something. He loved his family and animals and was very patriotic.
Surviving besides his wife Janice, is one son, Derek (Niccole) Saidla of Schoolcraft, MI; two daughters, Connie Kubiak of Crown Point, IN and Dawn (Drew) Gearhart of Marcellus; four sibilings, Don (Sharon) Saidla of Mattawan, MI, Howard (Linda) Saidla of Arcadia, MI, Glenna (Ed) Marx of Hudson, FL and Marcia (Roger) Hutton of Constantine, MI; ten grandchildren, Chays, Dylan and Katie Gearhart, Lauryn and Aiden Saidla, Ryan and Brandon Myer, Justin Verbeek, Trevor and Brianna Kubiak and many nieces & nephews.
There will be a graveside memorial service at 1 PM Sunday, September 4, 2016 at the Marcellus Cemetery with a luncheon immediately following at the Marcellus V.F.W.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the V.F.W. Post 4054, the Marcellus Fire/Ambulance Department or Reverence Home Health & Hospice.

Phil Dobyns, 62

DobynsMr. Phillip C. Dobyns, age 62, of Three Rivers, passed away on Thursday, August 25, 2016 after a courageous and hard fought battle with cancer.  Phil was born on April 12, 1954 in Kalamazoo, the son of the late Robert D. and Elva E. (McLean) Dobyns.

After many travels of life Phil then shared them with his wife, family and friends.  Phil is now completing his final journey knowing he will eventually share with his loved ones also.  He served his Lord spanning fifty plus years with the New Apostolic Church of Three Rivers and Kalamazoo.

Mr. Dobyns was a graduate of Glen Oaks Community College and received his Bachelor’s from Western Michigan University with additional credentials as ISO 9000 QMS/EMS certifications as a Lead Auditor and Technical Manger/Trainer.  Phil’s professional career spanned over forty years consisting of travel to numerous countries with Travel Accessories, Kysor Metal Products, Summit Polymers, Entela QSRD and Hartford Steam Boiler/ Registration Services.

Phil leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Michal (Akins) Dobyns, whom he married on May 2, 1975; three daughters, Ericka (Robert) Letcher, Michal (Jonathan) Rice, and Terra (Mike) Miller; seven grandchildren, Tylar Salter, Jon Rice Jr., Mitchal Rice, Jakob Salter, Allysen Miller, Amanda Letcher, and Kameren Miller; one great-grandchild, Eastin Trey; sister, Linda (Michael) Caffery; many several nieces and nephews and cousins and a host of close friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on September 10, 2016 at the New Apostolic Church 3600 W. Milham Ave., Portage, MI. 49024 with brother Peter Cook officiating.

Memorials may be directed to the New Apostolic Church for Senior Programs. Envelopes available at the Hohner Funeral Home in care of Phil’s arrangements.

LEROY A. ‘SMILEY’ JOHNSON

LeRoy A. “Smiley” Johnson, 78, of South Bend, Ind., passed away at 10:55 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2016 at his home. He was born on June 5, 1938 in Constantine to the late William T. and Dora L. (Norton) Johnson Sr. On Dec. 31, 1958 in Franklin, Ky., he was united in marriage to the former Mary Carpenter.

Smiley is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Johnson; daughter, Esther (Mark) Robinson of Fond du Lac, Wis.; two sons, LeRoy (Vicky) Johnson II and Larry Johnson, both of South Bend, Ind.; two grandchildren, Jessica Johnson and Alex Robinson; one great grandson, Ayden Thomas; two brothers, Gerald (Joann) Johnson of Three Rivers and Dennis Johnson of Navasota, Texas and many nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, William T. Johnson, Jr.

Smiley moved to the family farm at the age of six and began attending Corey Church of the Nazarene in Three Rivers. His love of God and the church has always been close to his heart. He served his country honorably in the United States Air Force. In 1969, he moved to South Bend where he lived the remainder of his life. Smiley worked as a burglar alarm specialist for Diebold Inc. retiring in 1999 after 35 years of service.

A Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 29 at the South Bend First Church of the Nazarene, 51690 Ironwood Road, South Bend, Ind. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the services. Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, South Bend is assisting the family with arrangements.
